Cyber Corridors Column V
The Power of the Artist in Communication - National to Global
“Arts Competitions – Awards – Acquisitions”

Professor Nell Arnold
, art critic and author, responses to recent concerns expressed by artists.
“We have to win arts competitions to be recognized or valued.”

In a country of 22 million people with one third artist or athlete or author or architect at some level or another,
this concern does not make sense. There are only a few national and state awards and then awards dwindle in
level of achievement and influence to local communities.  Awards encourage artists, athletes, authors toward
excelling their talent through skill and commitment. The award highlights their effort and talent as inspired so
others continue to witness examples. Awards, however, should not increase or diminish the drive of artists to
communicate, learn, progress, and seek markets that will support their endeavours.

In this column, Professor Arnold provides rationale that artists, galleries, corporate investors, government
agencies for art in public places, exhibitions, and trade commissions may consider. Creating and awarding
grants, investments and acquisitions  not only support the artist/author/architect but also ensures the
presentation of
Landscapes, Images, People, Communities, Efforts, Endeavours, Views of Australia.

Why?  Australia is a large land mass of only a few people, but a nation of leaders in research, diversity,
contribution, rural industries, space communication, medicine, health service systems, and in giving as well
as outreaching internationally. In this reality, there are many opportunities for the artist, author, architect,
athlete to be recognized, supported through investments, sponsorships and acquisitions as local to global
communicators about Australia.

Explore the rationale, examples, critiques introduced for dialogue in this issue. Each artist is unique and each
artist must forge a communication pathway that represents their gift to the world, and none other. Originality
may be location, style, technique, view, vista – none of these attributes are limited or even perhaps enhanced
by winning competitions. Artists, Authors, Architects are the communicators of and about nation – including but
beyond self.  Find additional pathways for expression and valuing.
